Covenant Gaming License v2.0
Version 2.0 · effective October 13, 2026This is the current Covenant Gaming License governing the public community, fan-content, actual-play, ministry, review, tutorial, and related permissions described below.
Controlling license text. This page contains the current published license. The version and effective date shown here identify the controlling public version.
Contents
Section 1
The Covenant Gaming License v2.0 (the CGL or License) is offered by Open Almond Studios, LLC to permit certain personal, ministry, community, fan, educational, review, and media uses of Open Almond Studios' proprietary tabletop games, settings, product lines, and related intellectual property.
The CGL is intended to make ordinary community participation easy while preserving Open Almond Studios' ability to control commercial exploitation of its proprietary game lines. It is not a general license to publish commercial supplements for Open Almond Studios games, and it is not the license for publishing original Integrity Engine™ games.
Nothing in this License restricts a use that does not require Open Almond Studios' permission under applicable law, including lawful uses of unprotectable ideas, procedures, systems, methods of operation, public-domain material, or other uses permitted by law.
Section 2
You accept this License when you knowingly exercise a permission that depends on it, including by publicly distributing qualifying Fan Content, using Open Almond Studios material in qualifying Actual-Play Media or Explanatory Media, or relying on a ministry permission granted here.
Merely buying, reading, playing, reviewing, discussing, or privately modifying an Open Almond Studios product does not by itself require acceptance of this License where no Open Almond Studios permission is legally necessary.
Section 3
Covered Open Almond Studios Property means proprietary tabletop games, settings, product lines, and related protected material identified as covered by the CGL, including Warriors of the Covenant™, Legacy of the Remnant™, Hall of Faith Hero Deck™, and future properties Open Almond Studios identifies as covered.
Open Almond Studios Reserved IP means copyrights, trademarks, product identity, artwork, settings, characters, lore, fiction, scenarios, prose, game-line expressions, logos, trade dress, software, source files, and other intellectual property not expressly licensed for the applicable use.
Fan Content means a noncommercial fan-created work based on or referring to a Covered Open Almond Studios Property, including free adventures, characters, homebrew rules, fan fiction, fan art, maps, character sheets, comics, cosplay, props, and similar works.
Actual-Play Media means audio, video, livestream, podcast, recording, clip, transcript excerpt, or similar media whose primary purpose is to show or discuss people playing an Open Almond Studios game.
Explanatory Media means reviews, tutorials, rules explanations, teaching videos, commentary, demonstrations, podcasts, articles, or similar media whose primary purpose is to explain, evaluate, teach, or discuss an Open Almond Studios game rather than reproduce it as a substitute product.
Commercial Derivative Product means a product, publication, software package, adaptation, supplement, expansion, accessory, or other offering that commercially exploits protected Open Almond Studios game-line IP beyond the limited media and community permissions expressly granted by this License.
Section 4
Except for permissions expressly granted in this License, Open Almond Studios reserves all rights in its current and future intellectual property. No right is granted by implication.
This License does not automatically permit you to sell a derivative supplement, adventure, expansion, setting book, novel, card expansion, game-line-specific software package, or comparable Commercial Derivative Product; redistribute proprietary PDFs or digital product files; scan or reproduce books as substitute copies; reproduce substantial protected text or artwork beyond an express permission; use reserved studio or game-line logos; imply official publication, sponsorship, approval, or endorsement; or exercise another right not expressly granted here.
Section 5
Individuals and private play groups may use lawfully acquired Open Almond Studios products for ordinary personal play, campaign preparation, study, note-taking, table reference, and private homebrew modification.
Private homebrew may be altered freely for use within the creator's own play group. Public sharing of that material is governed by the Fan Content provisions of this License.
Section 6
Churches and Christian ministries may use lawfully acquired Open Almond Studios products for internal ministry play, study, teaching, and game-group activities.
This permission does not permit redistribution of the purchased PDF or digital file, public repository uploads, scanning a physical book, substitute copies, or other distribution of the underlying product itself.
Section 7
Open Almond Studios permits and encourages public sharing of qualifying noncommercial Fan Content. It may be shared through personal websites, social media, community forums, file-sharing links, Open Almond Studios community spaces, and the official Open Almond Studios Discord where appropriate.
Fan Content may not be sold under this automatic permission. It may not be paywalled, offered as a paid download, commissioned as a paid derivative product, bundled as a specific paid reward, or otherwise made available only in exchange for payment.
A creator may operate a generally monetized website, channel, Patreon, Ko-fi, membership, donation page, ad-supported wiki, or comparable creator-support platform while sharing qualifying Fan Content for free, provided access to the specific CGL-dependent fan work is not conditioned on payment or offered as a specific paid benefit.
Section 8
Fan creators may include their own original artwork, writing, maps, layouts, characters, dialogue, and other original contributions in qualifying Fan Content. As between the creator and Open Almond Studios, the creator retains ownership of those original protectable contributions.
Ownership of original contributions does not create ownership of Open Almond Studios characters, settings, lore, game-line identity, or other Reserved IP incorporated into or referenced by the fan work.
Section 9
A work or use that relies on CGL permission must not include or promote pornography or sexually explicit content presented primarily for sexual stimulation; gratuitous sexualized nudity; sexual exploitation or sexualization of minors; advocacy of hatred, dehumanization, or targeted abuse; promotion or glorification of real-world abuse, exploitation, cruelty, trafficking, or comparable serious harm; fraudulent claims of Open Almond Studios approval or canon; or deliberate misuse of Open Almond Studios branding or IP intended to deceive, exploit, or materially harm others.
Depiction is not the same as endorsement. Difficult, violent, tragic, historical, theological, moral, or mature subject matter is not automatically prohibited merely because it is depicted. Context, purpose, presentation, and whether the work advocates or exploits prohibited conduct matter.
This clause applies to permissions that depend on the CGL. It is not intended to regulate private beliefs, private conduct, or independent lawful uses that do not require Open Almond Studios' permission.
Section 10
Individuals, groups, churches, ministries, creators, and organizations may stream, record, edit, publish, and distribute Actual-Play Media based on lawfully acquired Open Almond Studios games.
Actual-Play Media may be monetized through ordinary creator channels, including advertising revenue, platform monetization, sponsorships, memberships, Patreon or Ko-fi support, donations, podcast advertising, and comparable creator-support models.
This covers performance, display, discussion, and reasonable incidental use of game material needed to present the play experience. It does not authorize redistribution of books, PDFs, artwork collections, maps, handouts, or other protected materials as substitute products. Commercial adaptations beyond ordinary actual-play media may require a separate written agreement.
Section 11
Open Almond Studios permits Explanatory Media, including rules explanations, tutorials, reviews, instructional videos, podcasts, articles, demonstrations, and commentary. Such media may be monetized through ordinary creator channels.
Creators may quote, display, or reproduce reasonable excerpts of text, tables, diagrams, cards, or page images where reasonably necessary to explain, review, critique, teach, or demonstrate the game, provided the use does not substitute for acquiring the original product or reproduce a substantial portion unnecessarily.
This section supplements and does not restrict rights a creator independently has under applicable law.
Section 12
Actual-Play Media, Explanatory Media, fan discussion, and qualifying Fan Content may display an official Open Almond Studios product cover or official product image in a reasonable identifying or promotional context, including thumbnails and posts identifying the game being played or discussed.
Ordinary resizing, thumbnail cropping, or platform-format adjustments are permitted when not misleading. This does not create a general right to extract, isolate, alter, or reuse interior artwork, logos, graphic assets, trade dress, or other protected material outside the identifying context allowed here.
Section 13
A creator may make accurate textual references to a Covered Open Almond Studios Property when reasonably necessary to identify the fan work, stream, article, or other permitted use. Examples include “A fan-made adventure for Warriors of the Covenant” and “For use with Warriors of the Covenant.”
References must remain truthful and must not imply official publication, sponsorship, approval, or endorsement. This descriptive permission does not automatically authorize a formal “compatible with” claim, compatibility badge, or game-line compatibility branding.
Required fan-content notice
Publicly distributed CGL-dependent Fan Content must include this notice when reasonably practicable. Replace [Game name] with the complete official game title.
Unofficial fan content. Not published, sponsored, approved, or endorsed by Open Almond Studios, LLC. [Game name]™ and related proprietary Open Almond Studios material are used under the Covenant Gaming License v2.0.
This permission does not authorize use of the Open Almond Studios logo, OA monogram, game-line logos, or other reserved graphic branding.
Section 14
The automatic community permissions in the CGL do not authorize sale of Commercial Derivative Products based on protected Open Almond Studios game-line IP. A creator who wants to commercially publish a supplement, adventure, setting expansion, card expansion, game-line-specific VTT package, tabletop-support software product, or comparable derivative for Warriors of the Covenant™, Legacy of the Remnant™, Hall of Faith Hero Deck™, or another supported Covered Open Almond Studios Property must first receive project-specific CGL approval.
The approval record identifies the approved project, applicable game line, and authorized scopes. Access to a creator kit or other controlled resource does not create rights beyond that approval. Game-line logo use is allowed only when expressly included as an approved scope.
Approval is not account-wide and does not automatically extend to unrelated products, future titles, substantially different editions, adaptations, or other projects. Rights outside the standard commercial CGL project pathway—including major non-tabletop adaptations, co-publishing, or unusual reserved-asset uses—require a Separate Agreement.
The distinction remains intentional: media about playing, explaining, reviewing, or discussing the games may be monetized under the automatic CGL permissions; commercial derivative publications and products require project approval.
Section 15
A generic VTT, dice roller, campaign tool, character manager, or other tabletop-support application does not require the CGL merely because it can be used while playing an Open Almond Studios game.
The CGL does not grant a general right to embed proprietary game-line text, artwork, lore, maps, cards, databases, or other protected content into software or VTT packages. A free fan-made tool may qualify as Fan Content when it remains within the noncommercial permissions and does not redistribute substantial protected content. Commercial game-line-specific software or paid VTT packages using protected Open Almond Studios IP require separate written permission unless expressly provided otherwise.
Section 16
The CGL and Powered by Integrity serve different purposes. Designated IE-SRD Content is the open rules layer under CC BY 4.0. Powered by Integrity is the optional compatibility/brand program for qualifying works. The CGL governs defined uses of proprietary Open Almond Studios game-line material.
PBI does not grant rights to Warriors of the Covenant, Legacy of the Remnant, Hall of Faith Hero Deck, or other Open Almond Studios settings, characters, lore, artwork, or Reserved IP. Likewise, the CGL does not grant the Powered by Integrity badge or other PBI branding rights.
A work that uses both separately licensed Integrity Engine material and proprietary Open Almond Studios game-line IP must satisfy each applicable permission. One permission does not override the other.
Section 17
The CGL grants only rights Open Almond Studios owns or controls and is authorized to grant. Creators remain responsible for permissions needed for third-party music, artwork, footage, fonts, trademarks, performances, likenesses, software, or other material they add.
Open Almond Studios does not become the publisher, producer, sponsor, employer, partner, agent, rights-clearance service, or guarantor of a creator using the CGL. Third-party, public-domain, or separately licensed material appearing in an Open Almond Studios product remains subject to its own governing rights or license.
Section 18
The CGL does not grant permission to use protected Open Almond Studios text, artwork, product files, branding assets, or other Reserved IP as training, fine-tuning, embedding, or dataset material for generative AI or machine-learning systems.
This restriction addresses rights granted under the CGL and does not purport to resolve uses that may be independently lawful without Open Almond Studios' permission. It does not, by itself, prohibit ordinary creator use of AI-assisted tools where the workflow does not rely on a right to train or fine-tune a model on protected Open Almond Studios material.
Section 19
A Fan Content creator, actual-play producer, reviewer, ministry, or other CGL user may not represent that a work or interpretation is official Open Almond Studios canon unless Open Almond Studios has expressly said so in writing.
Open Almond Studios may share, feature, discuss, praise, or link to community content without thereby converting it into official canon, creating a publishing relationship, or assuming responsibility for the content.
Section 20
For an ordinary, curable violation, Open Almond Studios will provide written notice identifying the alleged breach and allow 30 days after effective notice for the person relying on the CGL to cure it. A timely and adequate cure preserves the applicable permission, and reasonable evidence of correction may be requested.
Examples can include a missing unofficial-status disclaimer, improper removable logo use, a paywall that can be lifted, excessive reproduced excerpts that can be reduced, or another technical violation that can reasonably be corrected.
Section 21
Open Almond Studios may suspend or terminate CGL permissions without the ordinary 30-day cure period only when a breach is serious, intentional, fraudulent, or creates continuing material harm for which waiting through the ordinary cure period would be unreasonable.
Examples may include deliberate commercial piracy, knowingly distributing stolen or infringing Open Almond Studios product files, counterfeiting branding, knowingly fraudulent claims of publication or endorsement, deliberate serious violation of the Integrity Clause, or continuing material misconduct after prior notice and cure opportunities. Immediate action should be proportionate to the harm reasonably presented, and written notice should be provided as soon as reasonably practicable.
Section 22
If a person's CGL permission terminates, that person must stop the use that depended on the terminated permission within a reasonable period identified in the applicable notice or resolution.
Because the CGL does not automatically authorize commercial derivative inventory, a separate physical-inventory sell-off rule does not automatically apply to Fan Content or other CGL uses. A separate written agreement controls any separately authorized physical product unless Open Almond Studios agrees otherwise.
Termination does not transfer ownership of a creator's original material to Open Almond Studios. Provisions concerning ownership, reserved rights, responsibility, disclaimers, governing law, notices, and provisions that by their nature should survive continue to apply.
Section 23
Open Almond Studios and a CGL user may agree in writing to a practical resolution different from the default remedy, including corrective notices, removal of particular assets, revised descriptions, modified access, a different cure period, or another proportionate solution.
A one-time negotiated resolution does not waive Open Almond Studios' rights in unrelated or future matters.
Section 24
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Open Almond Studios materials and CGL permissions are provided “as is” and “as available”, without representations or warranties of any kind, including to the extent legally disclaimable warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, noninfringement, accuracy, or absence of defects or errors.
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Open Almond Studios will not be liable to a person relying on the CGL for special, indirect, incidental, consequential, punitive, or exemplary damages arising from the CGL or permitted use of Open Almond Studios materials. Nothing excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or excuses either party from responsibility for its independent unlawful conduct.
Section 25
The CGL is governed by the laws of the State of Georgia, without regard to conflict-of-law principles except where applicable law requires otherwise. A dispute that must be resolved in court should be brought in a state or federal court of competent jurisdiction in Georgia, subject to non-waivable rights or jurisdictional requirements.
Section 26
A notice concerning breach, cure, suspension, termination, or another formal matter under the CGL must be in writing and may be delivered electronically to a business or creator address publicly designated or used for the relevant CGL activity, or another address supplied to Open Almond Studios for business or licensing communications.
Notices to Open Almond Studios must be sent to licensing@openalmond.com or a replacement formal-notice address published at the Licensing Hub. Electronic notice is treated as received when it enters a designated information system in retrievable form unless the sender receives a delivery failure or knows it was not received; a reasonable written fallback method may be used where necessary.
Section 27
If a provision is held unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect to the maximum extent permitted by law, and the affected provision should be enforced or narrowed to the greatest lawful extent consistent with its purpose. Failure to enforce a provision in one instance does not waive later enforcement.
The CGL constitutes the complete automatic permission Open Almond Studios offers for the CGL uses described here, except for additional written permission, product-specific terms, or a separate agreement that expressly supplements or replaces it for a particular use. Headings and examples aid readability and do not override operative text; “including” and similar terms are illustrative rather than exhaustive unless context clearly states otherwise.
Section 28
Questions about the CGL, commercial derivative permissions, game-line licensing, or uses outside the CGL may be directed to licensing@openalmond.com.
The canonical public version of Covenant Gaming License v2.0 is this page. Future versions, if any, will be identified through the official Open Almond Studios Licensing Hub with their own version number and effective date. Quick Guides, community posts, and explanatory summaries do not replace the canonical license text.
Section 29
Each public CGL version will identify a version number and effective date. A CGL-dependent work or use is ordinarily governed by the version in effect when that work or materially distinct release is first made public. A later revision does not retroactively turn completed conduct that complied with the applicable earlier version into a breach.
Existing qualifying fan works, recordings, articles, and other completed releases may ordinarily remain available under the version governing their original release. New works, materially revised editions, and materially new releases first made public after a later CGL version takes effect should rely on the then-current CGL unless Open Almond Studios expressly provides another transition rule.
Open Almond Studios may publish future CGL versions prospectively. Existing works remain governed by the version applicable to their release unless the creator voluntarily adopts a later version, a separate written agreement provides otherwise, or the work violates the version that governs it.
This web page is the canonical Covenant Gaming License v2.0 text. Open Almond Studios may also publish a versioned PDF for download and recordkeeping. Unless a later publication expressly says otherwise, this canonical web text controls if a convenience copy differs.
